Ooh, I feel so -- whorish. I just "joined." I'll be thinking fruitishly.
(I hope Flickr will be nicer to me than they have been recently. Seems I've maxed out my account, and I hardly ever use it. Do we have alternatives for posting?)

Rachael, Rachael, Rachael.. I feel I have let you down...

As this is the first round (At risk of giving too much away and getting my knuckles rapped by the headmistress) here are some thoughts...

What do we have? We have Oranges... orangie... also fruit... fruity... fruit of the sea... fruit de mare... fruit of the earth... orange flavour... orange colour... oranges ARENT the ONLY fruit... title of a book... orange cook book... fruit salad... not the only fruit... orange frying pan.... orange drink, orange juice, something fruity that isn't an orange... oh, and Veuve Clicquot comes with a distinctively coloured label...

etc etc

Cookiecrumb - is it you or flickr? I have just looked and a note at the top of the page indicates problems...

Oh Andrew, you are much too British for this simple American girl.

SO, not to seem like a pill or anything, here is my problem with what you ended up setting up...

People don't usually have a second chance to take a food picture, so critiquing it just doesn't strike me as overwhelmingly helpful. Or, you know, maybe that's just me. I mean, for someone to say "Lovely, but less sauce next time" doesn't do anyone any good since the food has most likely been eaten, and the scene never to be reproduced. Then again, maybe you will attract fanatics willing to make the same meal day in and day out until it is food porn, but for the most part, Im just not getting how that can improve anyones snaps. And saying "add water for sheen" or "maybe put it under the broiler to give it some browning" isnt about photography, its about food styling. While I realize many (many) of our sites shots are actually highly stylized (possibly non-edible) food, I dont think thats very much in the spirit of food blogging. Its about styling.

I love the idea of (potentially) hundreds of interpretations on a theme, but the actual critiquing of the photos, well, I need more explanation as to how thats helpful. Can you explain further? I admit, Im feeling air headed about it all. (Or just over intellectualizing. One or the other)

Just some food for thought...

Rachael

Rachael, there are a lot of photography sites out there where you can post photography and have a friendly place to get some constructive criticism. Not having spoken directly to Sam or Andrew about their motivation for this project, I welcome it because it provides that sort of critique for food photography.

There are a lot of times when a picture is just a snap and there's not an opportunity to reshoot. But there are times when I personally work on my photography technique by shooting a pile of artichokes or and empty dinner table or whatever. And I wouldn't mind putting those photos up in a safe forum to be critiqued by other food bloggers - who better to have look at my photography?

That's just my read on the whole thing --
