Embarrassing Cooking Mistakes

A little history: the primary reason my food blog exists is so that I can remember what I made when and where I got the recipe. I like having one place for notes and changes I made, plus the ability to search electronically.

When I make something that turns out really horribly (because of something I did wrong, not because of a defect in the recipe), I usually don't blog it. But really, it's good to have a record of what went wrong for future reference.

My friend Amy (Not As Good As Pork Cracklins) and I started a blog just for these special occasions. It's been fun to document the disasters - because sometimes things turn out so bad, it just becomes funny.

Our site is Kitchen F#!% Ups.

What does everyone else do blog-wise when things don't turn out as planned?

great idea for the site! I love it :)

I usually blog about stuff even if it turns out badly. From what I've heard, people like knowing that we aren't total experts either, and slip up happens to the best of us. :)

Even blogs that take things very professionally will sometimes admit things didn't work the first time - they mention a failure as 'an experiment' or a step in the 'evolution of a perfect dish'. The advice for those to proud to admit they're not perfect is to mention mess-ups the way Cook's Illustrated (America's Test Kitchen on TV) does - "we cooked 54 turkeys to learn how to make it just right".

I think it's really funny when people post their disasters, especially pictures of food on the kitchen floor (great meme idea by the way).

Although the camera usually isn't the first thing we grab for when something hits the floors or ignites in the oven, so I'm sure most of us have missed our chance at some very funny pictures.

that's great!
I sometimes post them, sometime keep them as drafts until I feel like posting them.

I posted my Top Ten Culinary Flops (So Far) on my birthday this year with the intent that the list will probably evolve as I make more messes in my kitchen during the coming years. And I've got a prominent link to that post right on the home page for everyone to see. I do wish that I had thought to photograph some of the really big disasters over the years!

Andrea, I love your zucchini bread item. Great idea to post a separate section with a top ten list!

Great blog but can't comment on it, says I have to log in.
I usually don't post about it when the result isn't what I expected.

Well, I am no expert and I'm pretty much an amateur when it comes to cooking for myself, and I make no bones about it.

If something goes wrong, I post about it and why it went wrong, or what I think went wrong. I figure that is just as helpful for people trying out the types of recipes I am making.

I think it's pretty humorous when I mess up, and I also sometimes manage to save it, so I will describe how I did that, as well, in case other people have similar problems.

I always learn a great deal from my culinary mistakes, so I think that others will as well. Lots of times I end up not posting something that does not turn out well, though, until I can figure out how to make it. I've decided to only blog things that I am pretty sure will turn out for people, and that I have made at least two or three times unless they are really, really simple.

As many as lessons I have heard, I can't live like the lesson shows me.
