[Spam] How Many?

Is it just me or has the level of spam comments increased recently? Over the last couple of weeks spittoon has attracted loads. Some days I can get 10 a minute, over a thousand a day. My spam catcher ensures they dont get on the front page but it is still annoying.

Is this level 'normal' - I never had this number before. How many do others get?

Your spam rate is impressive!

Mine has increased for certain and I think its due to my posting at the netscape portal. I have word verification and I still get a few spams through.

Only way I know how to deal with that is to go delete posts from the portal but I am not even sure that I can (and I get alot of non spam hits.. who knows.. maybe they are mostly spam but they dont leave comments due to the verification)

I get loads but not as much as 10 a minute (well, not just yet). I'm having to delete them all the time. Just now, i've deleted between 20-25 that's since i switched the computer off last night.

Most of them are Japanese, though...

Yes, especially within the past 2-3 weeks, my spam rate has gone insane...I'm not sure there is any real way to deter it. Unfortunately, it seems we are left to sorting through the comments/messages, manually, as there are legitimate ones mixed in.

The only way you can get that level is if the automatic spam bots are finding your comment script.

I notice that you're using the default Movalble Type script name - mt-comments.cgi - the spammers search for that script name and then pound it.

Change it and you'll see an immediate decrease. They'll find you again eventually, but you won't get this kind of flood again. Changing the default traback script name is a good idea too.

I'm not sure which version of MT you're running so my older instructions for version older 2.6something probably won't apply. See Six Apart's instructions or Google "changing the mt-comments.cgi script name" for fancier automatic ways to do it.

I don't get any spam comments at all. I use blogger and have word varification, I guess it really works! Wow. (Then again, my site hardly pulls in the numbers yours does...)

You say a thousand a day? Huh. Well, think of it this way, you are a fantastically popular blogger! See, there is a bright side to everything!

Paul, that's a good tip. I've had my spam filter turned up which sadly means I sometimes miss legitimate comments. I shall attempt to change the name and turn the filter down until discovered again. i wonder _ and I shall find this out – if it is possible to do the same with trackbacks?

I am with Rachael on this one. I never get spam. Well, maybe a neglible 5 a year or something like that. Obviously blogger is doing something right.

Thanks to Paul, our HTML hero, who always seems to have the right answer for us all at his finger tips.

Ed, yea, changing the default trackback script name (tb.cgi) works wonders too.

I may or may not be a html hero, but I sure can't type before coffee. ("traback script name"="trackback script name")

Mine's all been German poker spam lately, which is at least entertaining as well as annoying, I suppose. (Hey, brush up on my German vocabulary while deleting spam -- wunderbar!)

I ended up doing the risky thing of banning a number of IP addresses where most of the spam originated (hoping these addresses are only used for spam & aren't stolen/legit addresses), and that cut down on the flow quite a bit.

I also changed comments.php & comments-popup.php to alternate names, (I'm on Wordpress*), but that didn't appear to have any effect at all. I'm wondering if I'm missing an additional step for that trick to work. (Paul -- any idea on how to do this for WP as well as MT??)

(*I should note on WP I also use both the Askimet & Bad Behavior plugins which do help quite a bit.)

I wasn't going to post a comment at all. If I did, I was going to say "I use Blogger with word verification, and I never get spam."
Then an hour ago I got the LONGEST spam on a recent post, and it was *relevant* to the topic. But spam nonetheless.
(Oh god, it was Eggs 'n' Spam, come to think of it!)
Scary.

Cookiecrumb, how funny. I also use word verification, after resisting it for the longest time, and I never get spam. I'll try to remember that the next time blogger won't let me upload photos.

Cheers Paul I'll be on the the tb.cgis too. BTW who can type before coffee?
I've beeen trying to avoid the CAPTCHA test and rely on the Movable Type filter. I have it at +1 and works very well only occasionally catching legitimate commenters. I think that's because I've set up to spot this type of spam: "Not much on my mind. I don't care. I've just been letting everything happen without me.."

Another word verification Blogger here. I get it occasionally, but few and far between. Go Blogger! ;)
