[Reporting] Sitemeter "Unknowns"

I don't have a need for real in-depth stats for my sites so I've been using the free version of Sitemeter. In the Referrals section, the referring page often shows up as Unknown. Can anyone enlighten me as to what this means?

    i think it means that the IP owner blocks it from being ID'd.

    I thought it was when sitemeter coudlnt see that you had come from a link.

    ie if someone just typed in your url by hand, or had a book mark for it, rather than coming in through a link
