Help! Stats on subscribers?

Hi all. I know, it's been a (long) while...

Words to Eat By went a little dormant once my son, Harry, came along, but now that he's practically in college I'm ready to revitalize it and make a new push. Someone asked me the other day how many subscribers I have--I'm working on a book proposal and it could be a valuable thing to cite--but I have no idea. I've done a little investigating, but with the myriad ways readers can find our content it seems almost impossible to aggregate a total number. Bloglines, Feedburner, Google Reader, etc... Does anyone have any suggestions?

Google Feedburner does a pretty good job of estimating the number of RSS and email subscribers, if you're using Feedburner to manage your RSS feeds.

You can see how many people are Following you by logging in to your Blogger Dashboard.

Thanks for the quick response. But according to Blogger, I've only got 4 followers! On Feedburner there are over a hundred more more, and on Bloglines still more. Neither of those counts Google Reader users, do they, or any of the other readers? I can't figure out how to get a total number.

I don't use Blogger, so I don't have anything specific for that, but as far as knowing your traffic (which may be even more useful for your book deal) you can get a free statcounter.com account. It lets you track things like how many total hits, how many unique hits, how many returning visitors, what are they searching, etc, etc. I've been using it for a couple of years and find the data invaluable.

Sorry, I should've said: I've got a Sitemeter counter so I've got all that, but my agent suggested that having an impressive number of subscribers would be helpful. Of course, that assumes one *has* an impressive number...

If you're signed up with feedburner, it should give you the count for ALL subscribers, including Bloglines, Google Reader, MyYahoo, etc. Under Feed Stats check Subscribers for the breakdown.

Aha! Thank you so much, Amy.

Well i guess we can support you on that i wonder why but seems like that if you do it by yourself it would not have the same value for people and google at all.

I just let google deal with all my stats - they give me enough info to be getting on with.
