Email subscription service/plugin for a Wordpress blog?

Hi everyone. I've been trying to find an email subscription plugin or service for a site I launched in December - The Gastronomer's Bookshelf. As the site is for culinary book reviews, I know that many readers will want to subscribe to updates, but might not be used to RSS.

I've been testing the Subscribe2 plugin, behind the scenes, but I feel its interface could be quite daunting for new users (it lets you choose which categories you subscribe to by email, and as the site has a very large number of book categories to choose from, the list is daunting!).

I know I could just direct the RSS feed to Feedburner and let people do a Feedburner email subscription, but I was wondering if people know of anything else that might offer a little more flexibility (eg, I'd love a subscribe field on the front page where people could just enter their address and click "subscribe").

Any suggestions appreciated.

I use the Subscribe2 plugin - the users don't actually "see" the interface at all in most cases so don't worry about that.

Feedburner offer an email subscription to your RSS feed, if that seems better. You can paste a bit of code into your site which gives a "one step" sign up box in your sidebar (or wherever you want).

I really like the way Feedburner handles the subscriptions. The email the subscriber sees is formatted more nicely than it is with the Subscribe2 plugin, IIRC.

You could see if Feedblitz is what you're looking for.

I don't use the subscribe2 plugin but a programmer added some simple code to my sidebar and it is very easy for people to subscribe. I tried pasting the code on here but it's not accepted. If you want send me an email layla att laylita dot com and I'll send it to you.

Thanks for your feedback everyone. I'm going to have a look at Feedblitz and play around a little more with Subscribe2 perhaps. (And thanks Layla)

Duncan,
I played around a bit and now I've ditched the Subscribe2 plugin altogether, instead offering email subscriptions via Feedburner.

That's 1 less plugin and less overheads to worry about; should make my site behave a bit better to boot.

Try Mailpress, it works really well and is easy to customize.
