Companies wanting to advertise on my site

Hi there,

I've been approached by a couple of companies to advertise on my site. I am very flattered but have no idea what's reasonable. Any thoughts? Thanks!

It depends on the size of the ad and the placement. Anywhere between 40 cents to $1.00 per 1,000 views is within the industry standard. Rates change based on size, placement, whether it's an image ad, animated, changes often, that you're obligated to mention it in your editorial content, length of term ...

I charge about $10 a 1,000 unique visitors which I'm told is to cheap.

As Cybele said, it depends on the size and placement on your page, but display ads are usually billed on a CPM (cost per mille (1000)). Depending on how targeted the advertising space is (since you have a food blog I'm assuming it's a food related ad?), rates can range from a CPM of under $1 to over $10. Since I'm assuming you don't already have a ad platform to manage your ads, you'll probably just want to quote them a CPM and let them know how many pageviews you get a month (CPM*[pageviews/1000]) is how you'd calculate how much revenue the ad would generate. Hope that helps.

Congrats for the offers you're getting. :) I'm sure it feels great.

A note of caution, while you have all the companies coming to you with their requirements, make sure that you check with them for a contract. Some advertisers will restrict you from working with other advertisers.

while you can get an idea of what is reasonable to ask via the CPM method, you might want to consider a flat fee agreement. For above the fold advertisement to a targeted audience, website can ask for as much as $50 CPM- for each ad unit! For example, Daily Candy charges over $200 CPM because their demographic is so refined! So, refined readership means higher CPM. I recommend you to create a rate card, and charge a certain fixed $ amount in the range of $10-20 CPM for above the fold, and $3-10 below the fold.
Good Luck!

You can go the do-it-yourself route, but I use Google AdSense and Blogher. These seem to do nicely.

Cheers!

Heather, must have missed this when you posted it. I don't know anything about individual advertising prices, but I am very happy with BlogHerAds. If you have any questions about that, e-mail me and I'll tell you what I know.

I would be very cautious about any kind of advertising agreement that requires you to mention a product in your posts, since that becomes a permanent ad for the product. I rarely even do reviews for that reason.
