Offline Blog Editor

Hello all- I've fallen tremendously behind in blogging lately, and it's largely in part due to the ever-tightening NetNanny at work: most blogs, flickr, etc. have been blocked.

Now, I always completed my work before catching up on blogs, or working on a post, but of course, the head honchos don't see it quite like that. However, if there were an offline blog editor I could use, then simply upload the post when I get home, life would be a bit more cheery.

Does anyone have any experience with any editors? I would be using a PC & Internet Explorer.

I am in love with Windows Live Writer. I started using it after my Picasa broke down when we were on vacation in Hawaii and I couldn't use the BlogThis button anymore. The best thing I like is that it doesn't have the stupid 4 picture per post limit that Picasa did.

WLW integrates perfectly with my Blogger blog. It handles picture resizing like a breeze and also makes it easy to add ALT and TITLE text to my pics and links. On top of that, it has many useful plugins that make doing things like adding links, finding and replacing text, or even doing word count easy.

The only thing I don't like about it is I can't easily center pictures on a page - I have to manually edit the HTML to add a CENTER parameter. Does anyone have a better solution for that?

Would second above comment on WLW, although haven't used it since switching to Wordpress. Was really handy though!

This sounds wonderful ... but I'm a Mac girl - anyone got a similar Apple solution?

deborah- doesn't wordpress allow you to write offline somehow also?

With the latest version of wordpress and using Google Gears, there is a way to have your wordpress editor operate locally and then sync up when you go online

Thanks for the comments. While I do have Wordpress, I don't have the latest version, and have had difficulties attempting to download it (lost my password to cPanel, and can't get it back).

I'll give LiveWriter a look through.

I just use a wordprocessor like OpenOffice Writer and then cut and paste once I have access to my blog. You also have the option in Open Office to export to an html file and that might make it easier. OpenOffice is free but I'm not sure if they have a mac product...I'm a Linux girl.

Flock is perfect for offline post writing and for organising your online life in general.

Very old school, but I often write my posts (at least rough drafts of longer ones) in Word, and then copy and paste them into blogger.
I know blogger has some utility (or did) that uploads direct from word if you want, but I've never checked it out.

Of course, this doesn't help for pix.

I'm in love with Live Writer, and that's saying something because I'm generally not a Microsoft fan. I actually purchased a blogging plugin for Open Office that did not work nearly as well as LW, so I dropped it. Started using LW this summer with my WordPress blogs, and so far have enjoyed the experience. I like how it downloads the css file so you can get a true preview of the post. I like having an offline copy of each post, too. And because the files are html, they don't take up as much space as a Word doc might. The only thing I wish I could figure out is how to make it synchronize any changes between the online and offline versions, but that would just be a nice-to-have feature.

Windows Live Writer has saved my sanity! I started using it a few months ago and it has cut my posting time in half. I can prepare my posts, add links and photos and post to my blog without any of the aggravating formatting issues you get with Blogger. It really works great!

@Andrea - if you do a File, Open... and select your blog in the left-hand pane, you can download older posts from your blog, edit it, and re-upload it. Is this what you had in mind?

@Nate-n-Annie...That's it! Thank you! Also, want to share a plugin/add-on for LW that's very helpful. PracticeThis.com has a plugin that allows you to create templates that you can insert into a post. I now have seven different templates, including one for each blogging event I like to participate in regularly. All the logos are inserted and my recipe format is already in place, and I have placeholders for links to other blogs, etc. That has been a huge help.

The plugin is at http://tinyurl.com/678sgc.

Ok, now adding the link to the plugin properly...
