[Blogger] Photos Getting Flipped Around
Recently, I've been uploading photos to blogger using the little picture icon in the tool bar, and for no apparent reason, blogger will randomly "flip" one of the photos in the wrong direction. For example, I'll have a horizontal shot of a steak, but it will load onto the blogger page vertically. If this has happened to you, how have you fixed it? My techie husband fixes them for me after I publish my post, but I don't like having to republish. Can I prevent this flipping in the first place? Thanks!

[EVENTS] Going to Blogher?

Just thought I'd check in with my fellow foodbloggers to see who else is planning to attend Blogher later this week? Leave a note in the comments if you plan to attend--I'm looking forward to the event and maybe we can plan a foodblogging get-together at the conference.

[Blogroll] Instant Blogroll from Bloglines

At Sam's urging, I'm letting all you Bloglines users know about a neat feature: Automatic blogroll creation.

You have to set it up properly (making things public -- it will walk you through it), but if you go to the "Share" tab in bloglines, you can have it generate an HTML snippet that you can add to your blog's template, and that in turn will generate a blogroll on your page, based on your subscriptions. So when you add a new blog, it shows up in your blogroll automatically. You can generate a blogroll for a folder ("Food" in my case, because I assume OWF's readers don't care about things like puzzlinks.com) You can even fiddle with the style tags so that it fits the look of your site. (I have not yet)

There are some problems with this. Namely, I read some sites that don't have RSS feeds (www.gastropoda.com leaps to mind), and you don't get to add your own descriptions to the links, as I used to (and still do for other parts of my blogroll).

But it's a good way to assuage the I-never-update-my-blogroll guilt.

[Ethics] More about product reviews and the ethical dilemma

I was going to just comment on the previous post about this issue, but my comment was getting too long...

I've been struggling about this issue for some months now. Books are one thing, but what about products? Recently, I got an email from some PR company about a new soy-based product, asking if I wanted some review samples. I wasn't sure what to do with this, especially since I didn't know if it would be a product I'd like. (I tend to be against manufactured food, but the way the marketroid person described it made it rather intriguing.)

Then the question came to me: what if it was a product I was sure I'd like? Would it be different? What if some chocolate company asked me to review some amazing new dark chocolate bar made from wild cacao grown on some undiscovered island? etc.

In the end I declined the offer for the review samples of the soy product, as I have done so far (a la Sam) for anything else, from books to 'mention our site' stuff. I'm really not sure what I would do in the future though. Of course the irony is that I do have Adsense ads and Amazon links on my blog, and they do help to pay for the hosting plus more. (Disclosure: my last Adsense check was enough to cover the cost of a new digital camera.) The difference I see there though is that the Amazon links are to products I have bought myself, unsolicited, and the Adsense ads are there based on the words I have on my pages, again unsolicited. (I'm not organized enough to skew my words for 'better paying' Adsense ads or whatever. I write whatever I feel like writing.)

The one thing I don't appreciate is that feeling that companies are trying to use us, since blogging is so hot right now or whatever. I hate that feeling of being manipulated. On the other hand, free swag is always fun. I already spend a considerable amount of time and money on this hobby so something for free is so tempting. The dilemma... argh.

By coincidence a debate on exactly this kind of situation is going on at the moment on Megnut; she accepted some grass-fed beef review samples. The comments are split in their opinions.

Anyway I think this issue is going to be of increasing concern, and I love to hear everyone's take on it.

Any stats experts out there?

My new host has two server based stats packages and I'm not sure which one to believe. Since April the lowest number of visitors has always been measured by AW Stats while the highest have come from Webalizer. I've always been inclined to believe the AW Stats figure but now in the past month the trend has reversed.

For example, in the first week of July AW Stats was typical for the past three months measuring about 600 visitors a day; Webalizer about 1,100 unique visitors.

Then on July 6 AW Stats hits nearly 1600 but Webalizer drops down to 1,000 and it's been the same ever since.

In short, Webalizer says I'm getting less unique visitors than usual while AW Stats figures have almost doubled saying I'm getting more. What's going on? Any ideas?

Blog Viewing Issues - Firefox

I received a comment on my blog that the commenter was having issues viewing my blog in Mozilla/Firefox. My sidebar's text appeared so small that it was illegible to him.

I viewed my blog on Firefox on both a Mac and a PC and it looks fine to me. Is there something on my end that could be causing this, or is this just his computer?

Embedding Video (mpg) Blogger?

I use video on Daily Eats from time to time. I've been having problems with embedding video through bloggger. It would seem the only way mpg file works is if I code it to start playing when the page loads. This can be annoying to some of my visitors.

Here's the source I use to generate code:
http://cit.ucsf.edu/embedmedia/step2.php?mediatype=WindowsMedia

The only problem with using this code is the mpg won't play at all.
http://www.dailyeats.com/2006/07/beer-can-chicken.html
but the go around is to add the external link.

This is an example of how I originally would code:
http://dailyeats.com/2005/09/phoenix-grilling-and-barbecue.html
as you can see the only way it works is if it starts playing when the page loads.

Any suggestions? Thanks very much!

[Blog Content][Indexing]
Hi All,
This is my first post on the s'cool, and I want to thank everyone for making this such a supportive and knowledgeable community. I have learned so much through the well-indexed archives, and that brings me to my question: For those of you who have a lot of recipes on your blogs, have you set up a recipe index? How have you categorized your recipes and/or other content in your index? Do you have to add each new post to its proper category in the index or do you have a program to do that for you? I do not have loads of posts to deal with yet, so I want to start figuring out this issue before it becomes a really intimidating task. If you could share how exactly you set up the code for your index that would be helpful as well. I use Blogger. Thanks so much for your help with this and for all the advice you've already given me!

[Promoting] Food posts on the new Netscape.com

Hello Summer S'coolers,

I wanted to update everyone on the new Netscape.com's Food and Travel section. There was some discussion about it on here a few weeks ago, but I thought that now that the site has grown in popularity and registered readers, I'd mention it again and share results of a post I made on the site yesterday.

On the new Netscape.com anyone can post content to the site and the top posts get moved to the top of the site, similar to Digg.com. Digg doesn't have a food channel though.

I posted my a link from my own blog about fresh tomato sauce. The posting brought about 50 new readers to my site in 12 hours. While this isn't a huge number, even for relatively small sites like mine, I was happy with the results. I might get one or two regular readers out of it and that would make me happy.

We might try to post our best work on Netscape and see how it works?

Each time you post an article in the Netscape.com system you get to add keywords to it, maybe we use the tag "foodblog" to tag our stuff? This way we could simply find each other's posts on the site and, if we like what we see, vote for each other.

You can also post work of other food writers. I've submitted some of my favorite food blog posts to them.

The site is a Beta and they are always looking for comments and advice from users. If you find it distracting to have the food and travel headlines mixed together, as I do, you might want to mention this to them. The site is run by Jason Calacanis who was the founder of Weblogs Inc. He's posts some interesting thoughts on blogging and the future of promoting content on the web.

Adsense invisibility

Ok all, while we are on queer little code issues I have the following:

I have three columns (three containers) and usually have no issues with making changes to a container (any change to the conainer must, by definition, be blog-wide because this is the same template used across all blog pages - or should be)

If you look on the main page on the right side you will see two amazon book spots and then nothing beneath it.

BUT if you look on a permalink page (example page) you will see a google adsense block.

My question is: why is this adsense block not coming up on the main page?

I always use firefox so if you are using something else please let me know if it renders on the main page for you.

Any ideas? Is there some reason why adsense would be blocking this on my main page?

Thanks ahead of time.

banner image issue

After hours of painstaking effort, I finally had the image I wanted as the background for my header. I emailed a few folks to test it and people using IE couldn't see the image (it came up as plain white). It was fine on Safari and Firefox. I've returned (with much annoyance) to my old plain banner now.

I'm wondering if any of you high techie foodies have any suggestions/directions on how to figure out the problem here. I got the image into the banner by uploading the image to a test blog (using the blogger upload button), and pasting the blogger URl into the background: phrase under #header. It look so delicious on my Mac (running Safari).

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Embarrassing Cooking Mistakes

A little history: the primary reason my food blog exists is so that I can remember what I made when and where I got the recipe. I like having one place for notes and changes I made, plus the ability to search electronically.

When I make something that turns out really horribly (because of something I did wrong, not because of a defect in the recipe), I usually don't blog it. But really, it's good to have a record of what went wrong for future reference.

My friend Amy (Not As Good As Pork Cracklins) and I started a blog just for these special occasions. It's been fun to document the disasters - because sometimes things turn out so bad, it just becomes funny.

Our site is Kitchen F#!% Ups.

What does everyone else do blog-wise when things don't turn out as planned?

"Musing on Life's Twists & Turns"

Over at MouthfulsFood.com (my online foodie community), a woman called "foodie52" has inspired hundreds of us with a very poignant story, which began last August. She calls the thread "Musings on Life's Twists and Turns," and it is the story of how a group of Colombian orphans visited her city of Austin, Texas.

She writes: "So last Saturday in the Austin paper we read about Colombian orphans in town, hoping to be adopted. Hmmm ... interesting ... my husband made a phone call - just to ask, that's all. Right. Yesterday we began the process of adopting Natali, 13 years old. When we met her, it was love at first sight for all of us, including my two grown children.

"I thought we were finished with child rearing, but apparently not!"

Well, after one setback after another, and some near-fiascos, their daughter arrived in Austin, and their lives as a family together can finally begin.

Now that that story is concluding, Foodie52 wants to do more to benefit the orphanage in Colombia. Perhaps a blog to that effect will be in the works—I've offered to help her if I can.

She wasn't sure how to get publicity, and I told her that I would bet this community would likewise be inspired by her amazing experience, and that I'm sure many of you would be willing put a link and a mention on your blogs to whatever website or blog develops.

I'll let you know what developments there are (probably here and on my own site)...

Meanwhile, if you are like me, you might need some hankies when you read her tale.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Using bloggers

Hi everybody, that’s my first post in the school, but I always watched you from the back lines (not doing any noise at all, though: I’m a good student!).

Yesterday I received an e-mail from a young author asking me to promote his book on my blog. As he sent me an abstract and a picture of the cover I asked him if he could send me the book, so I could read it and review it with much pleasure, as it is about food.
He told me he could not send me a free copy and if I wanted to review it I would have to buy it.

As I am not making any money from my blog, and as I will review the book for free, do you think I should buy the book or just tell him that if he likes a free review (meeting the specific dead line of july the 20th) he will have to wait until I’m willing to buy the book on my own decision, and not by his kind request?

[Writing] Tone and Voice

I've read a couple posts on here and elsewhere that stress that tone/voice is the #1 thing to keep in mind when writing any blog, especially a food blog. I completely agree.

For example:
I feel in love with the romantic, novelistic style of Orangette.
The way Clotilde colors in Paris and personifies food is perfect.
Cooking for Engineers always sounds just like an engineer and that's a good thing.

I would like to work on my tone and voice, but I realize this is something that can't be forced.

I think practicing by posting frequently and writing from an emotionally honest place are good ways to hone my own tone. I also think deliberate reading of many different food blogs, magazines and books helps.

How can I work on tone/voice on my food blog?

. . . thank you for such a great resource. I have been reading these posts for the past couple of months. This site is a great reference.

[Poll] Statistics on Food Bloggers

Recently, Sarah at The Delicious Life, posted a few questions for her readers. I was really interested in the wide variety of people that stop by her site every day. (Interested, but not at all amazed. Her site rocks.) It made me wonder though, who all YOU are…so I thought I would pose a few questions to find out more about your blogging habits!

What is the name of your blog and where are you writing it from?

How long have you been blogging?

How many posts do you have so far?

What program do you use? Blogger? Typepad?

Do you check your stats? If so, how often and with what program?

Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?

How often (average) do you post?

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?

Have you ever made money from your blog? (Eek. Was that rude to ask?)

Ever been featured in the paper, on TV or in a magazine?

And now, a food question: Breakfast, lunch or dinner?

Can’t wait to see your answers…

Xoxox,

Rachael

[Traffic] What's your demographic?

Greetings from muggy, smoggy NYC.

Here's a fun tool. The Microsoft adCenter Labs Demonstration page claims to show who is reading your page. Do you have more male or female readers? Young or old? Put in your URL and see what they say.

My results show that I have a lot of 50+ readers and under-18 readers. I think the under-18s come because for some reason, "onigiri" and "obento" are deemed to be "anime food". The over-50s...not sure! (Though a lot of food sites seem to attract that age group.)

This link comes via AnilDash.

[Traffic] Search Engines & Topicality

Once you have a fairly high Google Page Ranking [GPR], at least 5, I suspect, preferably higher, writing about topical subjects might increase your readership.

However, merely writing about, The World Cup, for example, won't necessarily get you any extra hits. Just think about the millions of people who will have been writing about The World Cup every day.

The title of your post is the most important factor. As far as I can tell (and this is all vood-doo since no one told me this, I just worked it out for myself), google looks first to the post title to match words in a search. For example, if someone was searching for "The Blah-Blah Restaurant, Katmandu", anyone who had written a post with those words in the title would come up higher in a search then, for example, someone with the same GPR who had written a post called "My favourite Place for Dinner" and then only mentioned the name and place of the restaurant in the main body of the post.

Not because I was looking for readers necessarily, but because I like my blog to be a useful service that provides and helps the spread of information, I decided to title some of my posts "where to watch the world cup in san francisco", not really stopping to think what effect this would have on my stats. I really hit the nail on the head. The number of people who searched for that exact phrase was incredible, and since I am the only person in the world to have a post with that exact title, my readership over the month of the world cup just soared.

Now, it was nice while it lasted to have all those extra readers, but the world cup is now over and I am expecting to drop back down to my normal level of readership but I thought I would share this here, so other food bloggers can see the effect that effective, searchable titling of your post can have on your stats.

It's something to think about...

Poor Food Blogger - Let's Use Her!

Journalist (Who believes only ‘they’ have the right to write and publish) to Poor food blogger:

Journalist: Hey, you food blogger. I don’t get it why people are reading your food ramblings and recipes instead of my fancy articles in glossy magazines. I’ve checked your blogs a total 5 seconds. The horror, you write about what you had for lunch (gasp), how uninteresting and weird is that? So weird! Well, anyway, my editor wanted to examine this weird phenomenon and you are our specimen this month. Could you please write about yourself, more about that weirdness we are interested in, also send me your favorite recipe. I need some photos along with the recipe, and by the way, make it snap. I have a deadline to meet.

Poor food blogger (elated): Thank you for considering me for your article on food blogs. I am trembling with excitement and deeply honored. But because this article is for a glossy magazine, I would like to be compensated for my photos.

Journalist: What? How dare of you to ask me such questions. We will be sending traffic your blog way. Isn’t that enough, you weird food blogger? We would make money, the publisher and me by writing about you and by publishing your recipe and photos. Be happy that we've picked you, OK? Or, no more blog traffic for you!

Poor Food blogger to Blog Farmers (BF is who makes money by harvesting the other blogs recipes and photos for his flashy web magazine.)

Poor food blogger: Could you please not lift photos from my blog for your money making machine. I have explicitly put a copyright message on my blog asking people not to hotlink images. Thank you very much.

Blog farmer: What? How dare you poor food blogger to ask us such questions? We are doing a favor, by sending increased traffic towards your blog. By the way, can’t you read? The photo is fully linked to your blog and we believe adheres fully to general copyright issues.

Poor food blogger (meekly): But sir, my copyright message says no hotlinking of images.

Blog farmer: Shut up, shut up. You are rude! How dare of you to ask us such questions you poor food blogger. You are aggressive! You think you have rights? We are going to bad mouth you; we are going to ruin you. Ha… ha… ha….

A poor food blogger’s experience! :)

Blogger Template Issues

Has anyone tried to update their blog template recently and had problems?

I want to update something in my sidebar, but everytime I login and look at my template, it only displays up to :

/* Footer
----------------------------------------------- */
# footer {
clear: both;
margin: 0;
padding: 15px 0 0;
}
@ media all

and the rest of the template is not displayed - so I can't edit anything!

I've now checked it on three different computers (on different networks), and it fails to work in both IE and Mozilla. Oddly enough another of my blogs' templates displays just fine!

Anyone else experiencing this? Have a look and check! Does my page still display fine for everyone?

This Post was written by Fahara from Souperior

I smell something funny here...

I've been a poor blogger for the last month (okay, actually the last couple of months), but I've also got no regular computer access right now (this is a lesson for anyone who doesn't back up their hard drives: GO GET A BACK-UP SYSTEM. Yeah, I learned the hard way--and now all my lovely food porn pics are in jeopardy--praying to the computer gods every night).

Anyway, I was notified by email today that I got a comment on an old post, in fact my "I LOVE TO EAT A CHEESE SANDWICH" post from february. I'm sure it's not the best memory for everyone, but this new anonymous comment that was written recently was extremely, well, "fishy sounding". Here's the text:

It's unfortunate that you had a bad experience. A friend introduced me to Say Cheese! recently and I love it! The pesto sandwich is fantastic .. granted some of the pesto drips out but that's what makes eating a sandwich so great - especially eating a good sandwich. I'll take a Say Cheese! sandwich with a side of tomato soup and some character.

Say Cheese! and bring me an extra napkin..

Does this seem like someone from the "inside" is writing this? I really don't want to delete comments that are obviously NOT spam, but this just seems odd...maybe just a tad too smooth in the way its written. Or am I reading something into this that's not there?

Has anyone every experienced something like this before? What have you done? Have you written a response that implies that you think it's an insider comment? Have you just deleted the comment? Kept it up?

Something in season: The counterintuitive world of recipe copyrights

Something in season: The counterintuitive world of recipe copyrights

[Promoting Your Blog] Idea Sharing on Blog Promotion

Hi everyone – as a freshman here at Food Blog S’cool, I wanted to extend my thanks and pass along some great traffic promotion tips I received from Catherine of the excellent Albion Cooks.
I think they’ll be helpful for my fellow freshmen and maybe even you senior bloggers. In keeping with the sharing spirit, I was wondering if anyone else out there had any gems of promotion wisdom they’d like to share? I’m here to learn!

Here are Catherine’s tips (her site is http://albioncooks.blogspot.com/):
1. Get your food blog listed on Food Porn Watch (on my sidebar underMore Food Links), which lists your site (almost) every time youupdate it. This is a good way to get traffic and for people to findyour blog.
2. Leave comments on all the food blogs you like and people will findyou that way (and its fun to get conversations going etc).
3. Get Site Meter, a free traffic service so you know how many peopleare visiting. (People rarely leave comments so that's no guideline)
4.Get listed under Food and Drink on BlogTop Sites (Little buttonlink above my Save the Internet Button on sidebar).
5. Enter competitions and events - See "Is My Blog Burning?" linkunder my Other Food Links section.
6. Set up RSS Feed under Feedburner so people can subscribe to yourfeed.

Here are three of my own:
1. Using Flickr in conjunction with your blog gives visitors another entry point.
2. This one may sound obvious – but once your blog is launched, email everyone you know and tell them about it (and get them to tell everyone they know!) I was pleasantly surprised to get interest from people I never expected.
3. In addition to Feedburner’s email service, I put some widgets on my site that automatically add my feed to popular feed readers like Bloglines, Newsgator, etc.

Would love to hear what everyone else has to say on this topic. Thanks for the warm welcome!

[Links]: New window or not New Window

Today I was looking through the S'cool's archives and came upon this post which made for a fascinating reminder of how my own method of using the internet has changed in the past six months, thanks to tips I have learnt here.

The post was about making your blog sticky, ie trying to make your readers stick with your own site and not go off visiting any others, for fear of losing readership to someone else.

Personally, I am anti-sticky. I am also against websites opening links in new windows, because my personal preference is to use one window with tabs instead. And when I am reading I like to read through a link and then return back to the site where I started without opening and closing duplicate windows.

Since I sometimes include more than a dozen links in one post, I would hate to see my readers have to open a dozen new windows just in order to read all of the links that I feature. This is one reason why I personally do not force my links to open in a new window.

It used to drive me crazy - bloggers forcing me to read their links in a new window and cluttering up my desktop with new window icons all over the place, over which I apparently had no control.

Not any more. Thanks to that post back in January, I learnt a couple of tips that have reduced the annoyance that was caused to me by all of those windows opening on my machine. Hooray for Food Blog Scool!

The first thing I learnt is that before clicking on a link you can right-mouse-button on the link and actually choose whether you want it to open in a new window or a new tab.

The second thing I learnt is that if you use firefox, you can configure its settings so that whenever a blog or website is opening a link that is intended to go to a new window - you can specify that link is put into a new tab instead.

Even though I still much prefer it if bloggers do not force their outgoing links into new windows, because that is not the way I personally like to surf, now if they do, at least I am now able to deal with it without going crazy, thanks to these tips I have learnt at Food Blog Scool.

I thought I would re-share those tips again today, incase anyone else out there was having issues with too many new windows opening on their desktop and didn't realise there is an easy way around it.

(Blogger redesign) Blog not displaying properly on some computers

I recently had my blog redesigned and changed to a 3 column format. Two of my sisters (who normally had been big fans of the blog) had not commented on the new format, so today I asked how they liked it. They both sheepishly said they liked it better before because now they had to scroll side to side to see the whole blog. I said "What???" They both told me that they can only see two columns at a time, unless they scroll back and forth.

On my computer and laptop both, using both IE and Firefox, I can clearly see all three columns with some of the background color showing for several inches on both sides.

Anyone have any ideas why it is not displaying properly on some computers? Anyone who has time to check, please let me know whether you can see all three columns at once on your computer.

Thanks to anyone who takes time to help me. I know most of you know more about this stuff than I do, and I really appreciate the help.

Way of no return-How do I make a link?

I have a problem with my template that I have tried to change but I just can't figure out how to do it. I have recently changed my Blogger template, using a banner that doesn't lead back to the main page when you click on it so I have tried to insert a link on the right hand side that does exactly that but it only works on the main page where it is useless, when I go into the specific posts, it isn't there anymore. I realize that I obviously have to use the right HTML code so now I wonder if there is someone out there who can help me? Please....
