[Copyright] Protection & Creative Commons

Chez Pim's recent exposure of a blog thief who stole her work caused me to double check the terms of my own Creative Commons Licence. I found out it was out of date so I immediately updated it. You might like to check and do the same if necessary.

I was using 2.5 when the latest version is 3.0. If you are in the same boat, you'll note that Creative Commons Licence will warn you that you are not up to date with the following statement:

"A new version of this license is available. You should use it for new works, and you may want to relicense existing works under it. No works are automatically put under the new license, however."

Relicensing existing works sounds like a lot of palaver to me, but maybe I have inadvertently found a way around it. At the bottom of every post I have written since January 7th, 2007, I have included the following statement:

© 2007 Sam Breach at "Becks & Posh", becksposhnosh.blogspot.com This RSS Feed is for personal non-commercial use only. If you are not reading this material in your news aggregator, or at the aforementioned url, the site you are looking at might be guilty of copyright infringement. Please contact becks.posh.food.blog[AT]gmail[DOT]com to report any suspected violations. Thank you.

So in every post I have been linking to a piece of text in my 'about page' that clearly states the terms of my copyright. This way, if I update the terms of my licence on the about page (which I did) - it automatically updates the information on every post I have written which included my copyright terms. [I think I will change the wording to make it even clearer - ie instead of copyright infringement I should change to infringing my terms of copyright to be a little more clear].

If you want to be sure that your readers and potential users of your content are absolutely clear about your terms then the onus is on you to make it quite clear what those terms are and what any attributions should be and if you choose 'Share Alike' instead of 'No Derivative Works' (which is what I have), then potentially, other people can change your work to fit their own purposes. I am not a lawyer and don't pretend to be, but it might be worthwhile making some consideration about which of these terms sounds more suitable to you as an individual.

how to link pics?

hello all.
i am sorry to bother you with a total rookie question: but how do i link a picture with a web-adress / post /.... like - the picture of my browniebabe event & when i click on it i am automatically linked to the page where i find all the info about the event? or a picture of a book and when i click - it directs me to amazon where i can buy it?
i use new version of blogger - and i still have no clue how to do this. anybody out there who can explain so even i understand? - thank you truckloads!

Outrageous blog thief: see if your stuff is stolen and what to do about it

I've found a particularly nasty blog thief, Voncigars, and there's a good chance he's stolen from some of you too.

He took the photos and texts from my recent post on Paco Meralgo, a tapas bar in Barcelona, and reposted the pictures and edited the texts to appear as though they were his. There was, of course, no mention of Chez Pim as a source to any of this. A quick search in his archives revealed a picture and some texts he lifted from Clement of A La Cuisine, and a wine tasting note he copied word for word from Cellartracker.

There's such a mishmash of style in the photos and texts on his blog that I suspect that he's stolen from many other people too.

You can read my detailed post on this on Chez Pim, or just go ahead to the nasty thief's blog to see if he's stolen from you too. If he did, please report him. The best way to get back at these people is to run them and their sorry excuse of a blog out of existence. There are links to report him to Blogger and Google on the post on Chez Pim.

Blogger Draft Posts

Looking at the full list of posts on FBS this morning, I see a significant number of repeated drafts prior to final posts by several contributors. Although these drafts don't show to external readers, they will cause Sam an administrative problem if they are allowed to build up like this.

As far as I can see the problem originates from a change made recently by Blogger and does not affect users on other hosts. In response to complaints from users who neglected to save their own work and subsequently lost it, the change means that Blogger now auto-saves draft text as you type it. Unfortunately, certain changes (and I'm not sure exactly which) result in the system creating multiple drafts. I generated one from this post by delaying before writing a post header.

It would be a good idea if everyone on Blogger checks their recent posts and deletes unwanted drafts. Otherwise Sam will be drowned with admin work. I'll leave mine on display for a few days to illustrate the problem.

[General Temple Central] I want a Recipe Index!

Hello all -
My site, vanesscipes.com, is a year old now (hurrah!) and I'd love to have a nifty Recipe Index. 95% of my posts are recipes and I'd live to create an easy-to-read and visually appealing index where visitors could quickly scan for recipes that fit a certain criteria. Or just browse.

I use Wordpress.

I'd like to include the fields: photo, recipe name, recipe type (soup, dessert, etc.), cooking time, and season.

Here is a trial index that I made with a wordpress table with code and help (thanks!) from the author of trial index is only a test blog that I made for these purposes. My real blog looks similar but has actual content.]

So, here are my questions:
1. what do other wordpress users do for a recipe index?
2. does anyone have a blog or know of a blog with a beautiful recipe index for inspiration?
3. any comments on my trial index? Do the thumbnail photos make the page take too long to load?
4. Do any wordpress geniuses out there have an easy way to workflow one my standard recipe posts into a single entry into a compendium of fab vegetarian recipes?

Why is my blog ranked high in search on Google but not Yahoo?

Most, if not all, of my traffic to my blog Central Florida Restaurant Mom comes from searches on Google. I did a test putting in "five guys burgers fries review orlando FL" (one of my recent reviews) in both Google and Yahoo. I come up at the #1 spot on Google and am NOWHERE on Yahoo. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can improve my ranking on Yahoo? I know Yahoo gets my feed because I have a myYahoo page and it comes in correctly there. Is it because my site is on Blogger and that is owned by Google? Does Yahoo not incorporate blogs into its search index and Google does?

Tables

I'm having a nightmare with tables. I'm trying to put one into this post, but above the table there seems to be an enormous blank space that I can't get rid of.

Additionally, when I view it in IE there seems to be text wrapping on, especially in the notes column. Can anyone please help??

Email Subscription

Is it possible to get the email subscription feed to show only part of the post and include the photo? I played around with both Feedburner and Feedblitz and when I limit the number of characters a feed shows, the photo is gone. Also, I'm not sure if this has been covered in the past but which is better, a partial feed or full feed for emails?

Is one feed service better than the other? Some bloggers use Feedburner for feed reader subcriptions and use Feedblitz for emails. Right now I use Feedburner for both.

[Product Reviews] Good or Bad

Lately I have been getting a few mails asking me to review this and that. I have to admit I have mixed feelings about this and am not sure how to go about it.

Do any of you do reviews for products and items and mention them on your blogs?
Or do you have a strict rule against such reviews?

I'd love to hear more about the reasons behind your choices and the pro and cons of such things.

[Promoting your blog] Blogger's Choice Awards

Have you been nominated? Probably. Just about everyone has. It's understandable to be flattered but before you promote their activities, use their bug and ask for "votes", please be aware they are a part of PayPerPost an organization that you might not want to be affiliated with in any way shape or form.

PayPerPost were the ones who pioneered paying bloggers to shill for various clients. Call it advertorial, or advertising, it was very unethical the way they went about it. Now they require that posters reveal that they are being paid to say something nice about a product or service but frankly it still makes my skin crawl! This kind of activity damages the credibility of all bloggers.

Responding to commentor's emails..?

In nice ole Blogger you could respond to comments to your posts that arrived instantly in your email.
This is no longer the case in "new" Blogger.
Your response will be returned to you :(
Is there a work-arround for this frustrating glitch?

Help with Blogger Template Display in Firefox?

I just re-did my template in Blogger, and I have some stuff in my header and the titles of my blog posts that won't show up correctly on Firefox - it's fine in IE 6. I had always thought Firefox didn't recognize my font (Rockwell) but it does recognize it on the sidebar - can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks so much in advance!!

Ok - update - I now have the picture issue fixed thanks to a fellow local blogger, but I cannot figure out why Firefox won't recognize my font in the blog title or post titles, though it recognizes it in my links? Also, a couple of links on the righthand side, to NPR Food and Bay Area Bites aren't showing up, though the code is identical to the rest. Any ideas? I would love to use Firefox if I could make it work for me, but these problems are really annoying!

Blogger pictures, comments

Hi, is anyone having trouble publishing pictures and enabling comments on Blogger since May 18? Or is there something that I'm doing wrong?
I managed to bring the comments tab back after saving repeatedly manually (despite the new AutoSave feature) but am still unable to publish pictures directly.
I've just posted one through Flickr, more as a test post than anything else. Posting through Picasa didn't work as the picture later became invisible.

The Edit Pencil Returns

A while back I wrote this post complaining that when I switched to new Blogger, the "instant edit" pencil at the bottom of the posts disappeared. I used this a lot, so I was sad to see it missing. In the comments some people surmised that it might have been because I removed the Blogger nav bar at the top.

Now I'm happy to report that this must have been a new Blogger bug that was fixed, because the pencil is back on all my blogs! It's a really useful tool for blogger users, if you haven't tried it. As long as you're logged in, it's easy to click the pencil and edit if you ever spot an error in a post, no matter how long ago it was.

Weird php code problem

A reader brought this problem to my attention today and I can only assume its been going on since I gave my blog a makeover a couple of weeks ago. This problem only happens in IE. In my sidebar, after a link is clicked it disappears until it is hovered over and then it momentarily reappears. I checked out the style.php code and found this code that controls that portion of the sidebar action:

.side ul a:hover {
color: ;
background-color: ;
}

I was able to fix it by a total fluke of accidently leaving off the } at the end of that statement. So now it works in FF and IE but this doesn't make any sense to me. Does anyone know php well enough to explain this to me ? Thanks.

Gourmet Institute Anyone?

I'm wondering if anyone else is planning to go to the Gourmet Institute weekend in October? I have signed up, and I am hoping to meet up with some other food bloggers there. I am a little bit ashamed to admit that I'm not actually taking the seminar about food blogging - but it conflicted with Masaharu Morimoto's cooking demonstration! I also signed up for a seminar on aroma with Grant Achatz, a photography clinic with Romulo Yanes, and a discussion with Ruth Reichl and Drew Nieporent on reviewing restaurants.

The weekend includes a fancy cocktail reception on Friday night (Oct. 19) 8 classes/seminars on Saturday and Sunday, and a four course dinner Saturday night with a choice of Aureole, the Grill Room at the Four Seasons or Le Bernardin. (I chose Le Bernardin.) Lunch and breakfast are also provided at a nearby hotel. The total coast is $1395. which is a lot, but I figure my husband goes on his ski trips and Vegas weekends, so I can swing this - especially if I go by myself. I'm looking into a nearby studio apt rental to cut the lodging costs a bit.
