Problem posting

I was doing a new post & when I tried to publish it, I got this notice:
Your HTML cannot be accepted: Tag is not closed:
What does this mean?

Also, below that was a box showing this: 'Stop showing HTML errors for this post'

I was able to post if I checked this box but does this mean I have errors in my template?

Hi Heather. I don't think there is an error on your template. Your post might be using HTML codes to which one is not closed properly, i.e. the corresponding tag is with the / like <-/-tag name->. (I had to put '-' to avoid Blogger interpreting these as tags.) It might get a little tricky if you have multiple tags or embedded tags. If you are using the rich text editor of Blogger, then switch to the 'Edit HTML' option.

As for the 2nd message, it will be up to you if you wish to be notified of any HTML errors in the post. It could get annoying sometimes but could be a good check once in a while. However, I am not sure what will happen if you do have an error.

As the message says, you've opened a tag and not closed it. Look at your html for an opening tag <...> but no matching closure </...>.

It could be a link such as: <a href="....">link</a> without the </a> closing tag, or maybe text justification such as <div align="justify">text</div> without the </div> closure.

Generally this will not cause harm, but Blogger may keep prompting you to correct it. However, there are exceptional conditions under which the browser can get confused, display your posting and use a closing tag from your sidebar to match it. This then leads to display errors in the sidebar. So it is definitely wise to find the problem and correct it.

Bye the way, in order to post this response I have had to write the angle bracket tag characters in ascii, so that my text is displayed and not processed as html. Or at least I hope that's what it will do!

Your template looks fine, it's your content.

Your Brie post has an unclosed font tag. You might as well remove since it doesn't do anything. It has some ubalanced span tags too.

Is this Blogger's editing tool adding bad tags to italize and embolden text? Or did you code that by hand?

Also each post has a title and meta tag attached, which is a no-no, those are only allowed inside the head tag at the top of the document.

Thanks Ladycharlie, Mike & Paul. I noticed when I went to post the Brie recipe, the header above the main body showed fonts, color etc. which I had never seen before. I thought perhaps Blogger had upgraded its software. So, being one to change how things look, I chose a font style but it didn't seem to change in the body of the text. I didn't think anything of it & when I tried to publish that's when I got that error. I am definitely no techi here so, Paul, thanks for your second comment but I have no idea how to close a tag nor do I understand fully what a tag is.
It is interesting to note that the same message came up when I tried to leave a post on blog s'cool.
I will try to check for something that isn't closed.
