[Poll] Statistics on Food Bloggers

Recently, Sarah at The Delicious Life, posted a few questions for her readers. I was really interested in the wide variety of people that stop by her site every day. (Interested, but not at all amazed. Her site rocks.) It made me wonder though, who all YOU are…so I thought I would pose a few questions to find out more about your blogging habits!

What is the name of your blog and where are you writing it from?

How long have you been blogging?

How many posts do you have so far?

What program do you use? Blogger? Typepad?

Do you check your stats? If so, how often and with what program?

Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?

How often (average) do you post?

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?

Have you ever made money from your blog? (Eek. Was that rude to ask?)

Ever been featured in the paper, on TV or in a magazine?

And now, a food question: Breakfast, lunch or dinner?

Can’t wait to see your answers…

Xoxox,

Rachael

Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?
Use in what sense? I use it to track which blogs link to me. I haven't paid attention to their voodoo ranking number for a while.

How often (average) do you post?
1-2 times a week.

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?
Days. Actually, minutes to write, days to rewrite.

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?

Blog: Cookbook 411 & Still Life With...

How Long: 6 months with these blogs, but 4 years with a personal blog

How many posts: About 100 for CB411... but overall posts for all blogs? probably closer to 500.

Blog server: Wordpress

Check stats: Yes and often. Typically several times a day, because I'm just that crazy. I use wp-stats, a plug-in for wordpress.

Do I 'Rati? Oh yeah. Daily. Around 100 to CB411.

Post - Weekly++. I try to do at least 3 posts a week on both blogs, but I don't typically make it. But, at least once a week.

Post Time: From an hour to all day, depending on what I'm cooking and how well it turns out.

Search term surprises: "Foods that start with L"

Money, money, money? Do Amazon credits count? Otherwise no.

Press: Yes, in the Seattle Times.

Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner: I only eat breakfast for dinner... otherwise I skip it. I tend to skip lunch a lot too, so I guess I'll have to go with Dinner.

2 years and a few days shy of 2 months

705 post so far, to date

Using blogger software

I check my stats with Sitemeter daily or more frequently.

I check Technorati every day too, to see who links to me,its a great way of finding new blogs. According to them 454 sites link to mine.

I post every day or two on average.

I get a lot of hits for fairy cakes and mars bar cakes. Does the whole world have a sweet tooth?

Anything from 10 minutes to 3 hours or even more - rounding up IMBB or WBW took me days, literally.

No, not even a dime, for myself at least. I like to help make money for charity though, through Pim's Menu for Hope to begin with and now, I am trying to raise money with the 2006 Blogathon. for more details see here

Yes, I have been featured both in newspapers and a magazine.

Breakfast for dinner, of course, and everything inbetween ;)

Name: FoodBlog (original, ain't it?) Evanston, IL

I've been blogging since 1999, food blogging since May 2002.

I'm not sure how many posts, certainly much less than the average food blogger.

Software: Movable Type.

I don't check my stats have as often as I used to. I use Webalizer (slightly fancier analog script that comes with my hosting package), sometimes I take my raw stats and pull my referrers out with a script. I also have some other stat scripts to generate special reports.

I keep a Technorati bug on the home page of my regular blog and click every week or so. I've really dropped in rank this year. 419 links.

Post twice a week, averaged.

I spend about a half hour for a regular 'here's what I ate' or food news link post, a couple of hours of searching and reading for my food blog link posts, an hour or so for restaurant reviews, including photo retouching.

"food blog" brings in most of 'em.

No money, but I have gotten a few clients from it. And once in awhile somebody will send me free cookies or something.

Every once in awhile I'm mentioned in newspapers, although I'm waiting for my chance to get in the NYTimes. Not on TV, although some faraway news station flashed my screenshot during the intro to a feature they did on a local food blogger. A few magazines, but they've always been brief links to my list.

I have to choose? I like all three, but my real energy is always spent on dinner, and in all honesty, most days that's my only meal.

What is the name of your blog and where are you writing it from?

The Unemployed Cook, Knoxville, TN

How long have you been blogging?

January 2006

How many posts do you have so far?

Over 300, which I kind of can't believe.

What program do you use? Blogger? Typepad?

Blogger, even though it's been driving me nuts lately.

Do you check your stats? If so, how often and with what program?

I use Statcounter and used to check several times a day, but I haven't been updating as regularly so it's just a couple of times a week, now.

Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?

I have no idea how Technorati works or how to use it for my site. That's sad, isn't it?

How often (average) do you post?

Well, these days I'm doing really well to post once a week, but I used to post 6-8 times a week. I'm just so swamped right now that I can't think straight.

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?

It depends. Sometimes I start a post the day before I cook something, just adding a few more insights and pictures after I've eaten. Other times a post will roll off my fingertips in less than an hour.

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?

"unemployed"
"schezuan green beans"
"brioche"
"Ina Garten"

Have you ever made money from your blog? (Eek. Was that rude to ask?)

A bit. But I've also landed two writing jobs and an agent because of it.

Ever been featured in the paper, on TV or in a magazine?

I write columns for two magazines.

And now, a food question: Breakfast, lunch or dinner?

Dinner takes the most of my effort and is the only meal I try to make sure I eat every day. But I really love a great brunch.

1)My blog name is Souperior and I'm from Warwickshire in the UK

2)I've been blogging since an ex-boyfriend asked me if I had a blog, and I suddenly realised I'd wanted one for ages! 3 years and counting, but the food blog has only been going about 10months

3)I have noooo idea how many posts I've done so far, maybe an average of four a month for ten months?

4)I use Blogger, but hate it with a fiery passion. I might switch to a paid account and use something more flexible if I ever feel I can justify it!

5)I check my stats once a week, when I get my email report from Site Meter

6)Theoretically I use Technorati, I have a 'Souperior' tag on my blog but I'm not convinced it works - anyone care to tell me? Some very odd sites are tagged with 'souperior' that have NOTHING to do with my site, or the word in particular!

7) I post about once a week, usually at the weekends as I'm not particularly creative when I get home from work.

8)It takes me about an hour to write a post, a lot longer to edit the pics to go with, post them to Flickr, tag them with links, insert into the post, preview etc.....

9)No search terms that bring people to the site have suprised me so far, but then - I have no way of knowing really! 'Souperior' is the most common linking search term!

10) I have never made money from my blog, though I did earn two crates of wine as a 'thankyou' from a supplier whose wine I (voluntarily) reviewed.

11) I have been featured in papers, tv and magazines....but never for my blog unfortunately :(

12) A Food Question: Dinner, always, preferably at a bout 9 or 10pm!!

What is the name of your blog and where are you writing it from?

Our blog is Culinary in the Desert and we just moved to Maryland this week!

How long have you been blogging?

Just over a year

How many posts do you have so far?

Blogger says I have 807 - but that includes recipes I've posted - so about half of that is actual posts

What program do you use? Blogger? Typepad?

Blogger

Do you check your stats? If so, how often and with what program?

I use sitemeter and statcounter - check them 3 or 4 times a week.

Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?

I don't add Technorati Tags (never really got into using them) but they say 347 links to us.

How often (average) do you post?

Everyday when we can! Although the move has slowed us down some.

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?

Depends on how many recipes we made that day - maybe 45 to 70 minutes.

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?

This is difficult - not really sure!

Have you ever made money from your blog? (Eek. Was that rude to ask?)

Nope...

Ever been featured in the paper, on TV or in a magazine?

I guess some of our pictures were used in a Chinese magazine.

And now, a food question: Breakfast, lunch or dinner?

What program do you use? Blogger? Typepad?

Blogger

Do you check your stats? If so, how often and with what program?

Yes, I use Statcounter and check it at least once a day. I like seeing how people found me.

Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?

Yes, I have a Technorati button and the "Blogs that Link Here" link. There are 19 links to my site. I also use it to search for Rachael Ray content.

How often (average) do you post?

I used to do twice a day to build up an archive for search engines. Now I post at least once a day, Monday through Friday. Sometimes twice and barely ever three times.

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?

Anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?

"Rachael Ray Show Free Tickets" is very frequent. Not many surprising ones.

Have you ever made money from your blog? (Eek. Was that rude to ask?)

Yes. Through Google AdSense and Amazon Associates. I originally used AdSense as a way to get the Google bot to find me, but I actually started making money, so I left the ads up.

Ever been featured in the paper, on TV or in a magazine?

No. Hopefully Rachael will find me and ask me to be her blogger (although, lots of people think I am her despite a disclaimer in my About section).

And now, a food question: Breakfast, lunch or dinner?

Definitely dinner - I am able to cook and enjoy with my husband.

How long? Just over 3 years.

Posts: over 400 and I use Blogger for this blog.

Stats: This blog is part of a site. I check the site stats about weekly.

Technorati: No. Inward links? Goolge says 245 to the blog.

Posting frequency: whenever I have something to say. And it takes however long it takes. It varies.

Surprise search term: fried rice

Making money: Off the main site, cheapcooking.com, definitely. Off the blog itself, some.

Paper: local ones, yes, including a few articles about the book Digital Dish.

Breakfast, lunch or dinner? Depends on the time of day.

How many posts do you have so far?

What program do you use? Blogger? Typepad?

Blogger, not hosted on my own domain.

Do you check your stats? If so, how often and with what program?

I don't check stats because I fear I'd become totally obsessive about it. I do like to do Google searches on the blog's name to find people linking to the blog.

Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?

I don't "use" Technnorati per se, but I do search on it regularly, again, to find links.

How often (average) do you post?

Not often enough. Approximately once a week; sometimes more often, sometimes less.

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?

I can procrastinate forever, but actually writing a post might take up to an hour, depending on length. I write more or less off the top of my head with minimal editing.

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?

No idea, but searching for shellacked chicken (no quotes) on Google usually shows one of my blog posts in the number one spot. And it's more a meta-food post than a real food post. Go figure.

Have you ever made money from your blog? (Eek. Was that rude to ask?)

No money from Seven Kinds of Soy Sauce; I've made a bit of money from contributing to the WellFed Network.

Ever been featured in the paper, on TV or in a magazine?

I was contacted by a writer doing background for a food blog article, but have not heard anything since. So no, not yet.

And now, a food question: Breakfast, lunch or dinner?

Dinner, assuming I'm organized enough to plan a decent meal.

Seriously Good from Knoxville, Tennessee

I began my blog in 2003, but didn't invest much time in it until 2005.

I don't have an actual count, but I'd guess I've posted about 300 articles.

I use blogger but host the blog on my own domain.

I check my stats about once a week using the tools provided by my hosting service and Stat Counter.

I use technorati and had 344 links on my last check.

My goal is to post at least three times a week and each can take me
from an hour to a couple of days.

I haven't been surprised by any search terms, but I have been surprised by how frequently some of my photos are posted in MySpace.

I haven't made any money from the blog.

Seriously Good has been mentioned in a few newspaper articles.

I love brunch.

Kalyn Denny said...

What is the name of your blog and where are you writing it from?
Kalyn's Kitchen from Salt Lake City, Utah.

How long have you been blogging?
One year and a few months.

How many posts do you have so far?
474

What program do you use?
Blogger, but I would change if I didn't have so many links/page rank with this blog. Now I feel like I can't change.

Do you check your stats?
I use statcounter and check it many times each day, mainly to find people linking and see what keywords are sending people to my blog.

Do you use Technorati?
I use Technorati tags on all my posts (I have the basic ones in the post template so they show up automatically when I open a new post) and use it daily to check for linking blogs. I have a lot of links, partly due to Weekend Herb Blogging.

How often (average) do you post?
Every day, unless I'm on vacation, but usually even then.

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?
For a recipe where I cook it, clean up, photograph and then write, a couple of hours. WHB takes me 3-4 hours to write the recap. Just a post without a recipe, 30 minutes to an hour.

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?
Cafe Rio Salad Dressing
How to Freeze Fresh Basil
South Beach Diet Recipes

Have you ever made money from your blog?
Yes.

Ever been featured in the paper, on TV or in a magazine?
One of my recipes was featured in the local paper in an article about grilling. I was featured in Woman's World magazine in an article about the South Beach Diet (which doubled my blog traffic for about three weeks).

And now, a food question: Breakfast, lunch or dinner?
Dinner!

About 5 months now.

I had to log in to check, 37 baby!

-What program do you use? Blogger? Typepad?

Wordpress all the way.

-Do you check your stats? If so, how often and with what program?

Definitely. Sometimes a couple times a day out of curiousity to see who my referrers are, sometimes every couple of days. I use a plug-in for wordpress called phk and web-stat but am looking for other programs.

-Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?

Yes, but not often at all. Hmm... only 18 sites.

-How often (average) do you post?

Started with nearly every other day and now I'm at once a week due to life business. I'd say 4 or 5 days is fair.

-How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?

FOREVER! I can spend about 5 days writing on and off..... sometimes 2 hours is enough.

-What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?

Obviously the word "cheek" tends to bring up a lot of hits and "macarons" works out pretty well. The weirdest term used to find my blog "what questions should i ask the previous home owner when i am int..." ha ha ha.... I'm so confused!

POLL: STATISTICS ON FOOD BLOGGERS

What is the name of your blog and where are you writing it from?
Andrea's Recipe Box, and I'm blogging from Hampton Roads, VA.

How long have you been blogging?
Started in November 2005, although I really didn't expect to have any readers other than my family. I started the blog as a way to keep track of our favorite recipes and share them with family, and you can tell by looking at my earliest posts...slim on the writing. Then when I realized that other people were actually coming to the blog and leaving nice comments, I figured I'd better beef the posts up a bit.

How many posts do you have so far?
104

What program do you use? Blogger? Typepad?
WordPress. I started on WordPress.com, and then moved to my own hosting for the added flexibility.

Do you check your stats? If so, how often and with what program?
I use SiteMeter and Google Analytics in addition to my host stats. I check SiteMeter daily, Google and host stats weekly. I'm not obsessed with getting tons of unique visitors, I'm just fascinated with the amount of information that the stats programs provide.

Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?
Yes, but I don't check it very often. Only 15 sites link to me so far.

How often (average) do you post?
Twice a week now. In the beginning I was just putting up recipes as fast as I could since I was trying to get all our favs online for the family, but I've settled on the twice a week schedule, which is very comfortable.

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?
Depends on the food. Some posts I can write in under an hour, including the preparation. Some posts require much longer, like the filled chocolate Easter eggs I made this year...took two days to make them and the writing took several hours.

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?
Big Surprise: middle eastern porn or kid porn (ick)
Frequent: retro recipes

Have you ever made money from your blog? (Eek. Was that rude to ask?)
No, not even Amazon credits, although I have some clients who contacted me after reading my blog.

Ever been featured in the paper, on TV or in a magazine?
No, but there's always hope!

And now, a food question: Breakfast, lunch or dinner?
Lunch or dinner so that I can justify having dessert. :-)

How often (average) do you post?
2-3 times per week

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?

Peach Cobbler
Potato Salad
Soul Food
Southern Greens

Have you ever made money from your blog? (Eek. Was that rude to ask?)

152, I think. Yes, I'm too lazy to look.

What program do you use? Blogger? Typepad?
Wordpress, baby!

Do you check your stats? If so, how often and with what program?
Webalizer. If I'm feeling cool and contented, I never check. When I'm freaked about readers, I check every five minutes. Okay, maybe not quite that often.

Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?
Technorati's glitchy as all get out, but I do play there on a regular basis. Current ranking stats are 186 links from 88 sites.

How often (average) do you post?
As often as I can. Hah. How's that for vague?

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?
As long as it takes, which generally means, at least three hours longer than it should take. Sometimes I get carried away. Honest.

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?
Frequent? Why Angry Cat and Messy Kitchen, of course! Surprising? Someone once googled me for naked pictures of Wil Wheaton. Oh, wait. That was my other blog.

Have you ever made money from your blog? (Eek. Was that rude to ask?)
Haven't tried to yet. Am changing that soon. Bills to pay, y'know...

I just discovered Technorati and I don't yet really understand how it works. But if so many people find it useful, I'm going to do some more homework!

How often (average) do you post?

2-3 times a week, depending on how much time I have to cook.

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?

I tend to run on the long side. If I have pictures to load up (and I usually do), it takes me about 2 hours to do an entire post. I always have to check for typos about 5 times.

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?

I have a few friends who have commented on my site with their full names displayed, so when other people google them, they find me. I've had some visitors searching for "how to pit a plum" and "pastry dough." Nothing too weird (yet).

I just signed up for Technorati.

It takes me probably about half an hour to an hour to write a post.

Name of blog: I was really just very hungry, or Just Hungry. Mainly from Zürich, Switzerland.

Since: The food blog since October 2003. Blogging itself since...2000 or something

Posts: Exactly 270 on Just Hungry.

Program: Typepad. grr. I would switch if I weren't such a procrastinator.

Stats: Since Typepad stats suck, I have statmeter. I check 1-2x a week if I remember to.

Technorati: I've included Technorati tags since I started to use ecto for blogging a few months ago (ecto makes it easy to tag). I don't know if the tagging does anything beneficial though. I just have to remember not to use the default keyword 'puppy'. I have about 1,400 incoming links from about 300 or so sites if you combine www.justhungry.com and maki.typepad.com which both point to the same place.

Posting frequency: Right now I try to post at least every weekday, but I have been known to take months-long breaks, which is why only 270 posts in almost 3 years.

Time to post: Most of my posts take days to actually complete, since I try and test every recipe I post, sometimes more than once. This is because I once posted a recipe for lemon bars which didn't work out for many people and it's haunted me ever since. If it's not a recipe post, it takes just a couple hours unless there's a lot of research.

Search phrases: Funny ones I remember include "naked japanese sushi girls" and "what beneficial bacteria are in fish sauce". Most popular are "onigiri" "siopao" "steamed bun" "homemade bagels" and "miso soup".

Money: yes, though I have made more money directly/indirectly via non-food blogging. Since my day job is web development, I have gotten a couple of jobs from people who have found me via my food site. I don't count that as direct income from the food site though.

Featured in media: yes, a few times

Breakfast, lunch or dinner: how about all-day noshing?

My most frequent search term is Quiche Lorraine--something I made for a blog event. There must be a lot of quiche lovers out there.
No money, and no publicity, unless you count my sister, who is always telling people I have a blog and they ought to read it.

Do you check your stats? If so, how often and with what program?

Obsessively. statcounter, a million times a day.

Do you use Technorati? If so, how often? And if you are willing to share, how many sites link to yours?

I'm aware that I'm on it, but I've done nothing active to support it. I might start using the tags as makeshift categories. It says I only have 1 link to my site, but I know I have a few more than that.

How often (average) do you post?

2-3 times a week.

How long (approx.) does it take you to write a post?

About an hour at best, sometimes 2 or more.

What search terms bring up your site most frequently/suprise you?

nothing too frequent so far, but 'purple liquid for sores' was a good one =)

Have you ever made money from your blog? (Eek. Was that rude to ask?)

nope and nope.

Ever been featured in the paper, on TV or in a magazine?

also nope.

And now, a food question: Breakfast, lunch or dinner?

put your hands together!
