What do people think is the best stat counter? I have recently started using StatCounter, but I've caught it out a few times, and I'd like to switch to something I know is reliable, but which gives some good details too.

I use statcounter and though they have those glitches, the workaround is pretty easy (you just change the number in the web address from my6.statcounter.com to my3.statcounter.com or whatever).
Some folks like google analytics, which is really robust, but just be aware that you're giving a lot of information about your users to google.
I have used statcounter for a long time. I was pretty happy with the regular (free) statcounter, but last summer I changed to the premium version ($9 per month) and I love it. It lets you see stats for a lot more pageloads at a time so you can really see how people are using your site. I can only think of maybe 2-3 times their site didn't work right in nearly two years.
I use StatCounter and it seems ok most of the time. But I also have a SiteMeter on my site and it regularly reports traffic at about 60% of the visits and page views reported by StatCounter...so since I noticed that I don't know which to trust...
I don't know (and don't want to know) how these things work, but does someone know which one is accurate?
Stephen, I think that what accounts for the difference is that some stats programs don't count bots and spiders (not actual human visitors) and others do. At least that is what my brother has told me. He has both like you do and has also noticed that statcounter was consistently a bit higher.
Let me make it clear that I actually know NOTHING about any of this, so that's only a guess!
I have sitemeter, statcounter plus a Swedish one on my blogs and I have done some comparative studies and what I have seen is that both Statcounter and Sitemeter often counts the same person several times whereas my Swedish one counts him/her once and therefore gives me the lowest count. I think that they often have a memory of an hour or something and then they count the person again as a unique visitor. Providing that he/she visits the blog again the same day of course.
There's nothing to say you can't install just 1 stat counter, so I recommend installing several and decide which one you like best. Google analytics gives you a ton of info and drill-down data, but it's not the most user friendly.
I've used several and finally landed on SiteMeter because I like it the best. I like the statistics you can find out - including what search words people used to find your blog - and I believe the stats are pretty reliable.
