Trackbacks - Do you use them? Do you like them?

For those of you who have the ability to use trackbacks on your blog, do you use them? For those of you who read blogs, do you like to see the trackbacks?

I am seriously considering removing the trackback option because it is used so little by readers and is just a magnet for spam. I am constantly removing trackback spam. It's something I am willing to do if trackbacks in general are beneficial, but right now I am feeling a little down on the whole functionality.

Wondering what a trackback is? Read this.

I've used them and some people do trackbacks to me, mostly the Pragmatic Chef.

If I didn't have them, I don't think I'd miss them.

I would think Sixapart would have upgraded your Typepad er somethin'. I've recently upgraded to the newest MT version and while I get about 1200 +/- spams a day (trackbacks included), I only have to remove a few a week manually.

Somethin' don't smell right.

Hi Jen,

FWIW, I don't use them and don't pay any attention to them on other blogs.

I just installed them on my blogger blog and I find them incredibly useful for now, having been one of the people who earlier in the life of food blog s'cool simply "did not get them"

With blogger you don't have to physically set them though, they just come from anyone who linked to you. Maybe this factor protects against spammers better?

Or maybe not - time will tell - Cos I dont think you can actually delete the with blogger either.

I like to use them as a simple way to let someone know I've linked to, and usually babbled about, a post. I always appreciate hearing about someone picking up on something I wrote, but don't necessarily need an official announcement, so this seems to do the trick.

Ironically, I just sent a trackback to your "Eat Local" challenge, since I posted an announcement about it this morning. But I don't think it appeared on your blog, which seems to happen frequently with wordpress.

I've never used them, and since we have had a spate of trackback spammers on Well Fed that I have had to clean up after, and since I have had quite a few trackback spammers on Tigers & Strawberries (a few less than comment spammers, though), I am not too fond of them myself.

Who has the time? I find that after a year of blogging I still don't really have much use for them. Or maybe it's because there's so much other web stuff to master...I don't use or read them, and I read a LOT of blogs...
