[NEW blogger] Switching Food Blog S'cool Over

I think I have to switch over Food Blog S'cool to new blogger. I can no longer ignore the annoyance of logging in and out of my gmail and blogger accounts all day long to use one thing and then another. I would like to do it tomorrow but it would be unfair of me not to give everyone notice. So, I hereby give 28 days notice which I hope is reasonable. The blog will not be switched before February 24th 2007. The blog will be switched thereafter at my convenience, I am not sure what my schedule will be at that time.

I imagine members of Food Blog Scool, especially those with blogger accounts, will somehow be affected. I am not sure how - we will cross that bridge together when we come to it and if needs be I will sign up anyone who needs to be signed up again, again.

I will not be signing up any new members until after the switch now. If any current member has any urgent issues that need my attention, please write to me at my regular email address which I check more regularly.

Please let me know in the comments here if there are any concerns, although encouragement would be more welcome!

Further to comments from Kalyn, (thanks Kalyn), I think it might be better to switch asap. Does anyone object to me trying tomorrow?

Sam, just FYI (and who knows what's true about all this) for two days now I'm having trouble getting to my dashboard on KK. Every time I try to sign in I get a screen that says "switch now". There is no way to bypass that screen and get to dashboard. For the last two days I've eventually been able to get in by trying over and over and clearing the cache, but today it took me nearly an hour.

Somewhere in a different thread below Haalo mentioned that January 25 was supposed to be the day Blogger starts forcing people to switch. I don't know where she saw that information, but I thought I'd let you know in case you didn't see her comment.

If I was not in the middle of a huge crisis at my house (no water for three days due to frozen water line) I think I'd just switch KK today and get it over with.

Forgot to give the encouragement! I've heard from a number of blogger friends who tell me they have switched and no problems.

Also, I'm a member of a group blog through my niece. She switched her blog, and now on my dashboard I have a little icon where I used to be able to access that blog saying "switch to use this blog". So from that I an interpreting that individual users do not all have to switch at that same time. That should make it a lot easier to switch FBS. People who aren't ready to switch wouldn't be able to post, but it doesn't appear that you'd have to re-sign up anyone who hadn't switched yet. I think they could just switch when they were ready.

aha - that explains it - that's the button I just saw which is what made me write this mail.

maybe i need to switch sooner?

i could do it tomorrow but i don't want to upset any pupils.

Btw, I logged into blogger.com and i saw that message trying to force me to change, so I closed that window completely and hit on the bar on the top of my blog instead and it let me straight in to my dashboard no problem. maybe try that next time it only took a minute not an hour?

sending good vibes your way to help with the ice crisis. the only ice we ever see here in SF is in a glass with a cocktail in it, so I guess we have it easy.

I'm not a Blogger user, but I sympathize as I read more about the problems many of you Blogger folks are having. Sam, please do what is easiest for you, whenever it's easiest for you. You're providing a huge service to all food bloggers, and we'll roll with whatever punches come from the switch.

I think it's time to change, I changed this morning and it went well. All Blogger blogs have to change sooner or later, probably sooner so go for it Sam!

Sam said...

so if i change one blog will all the others follow suit - or do i have to do each one individually?

also - should i d becks & posh or the s'cool first do you think?

they both have 900+ posts, FBS a handul more. But B&P is my baby and as such the one I would prefer to prioritize.

Can't object to this because it sounds like Blogger won't give you a choice. If it doesn't work, there are probably a million different things could go wrong, but all of them are probably fixable to some degree.

So go for it and good luck! :)

Sam- do p&b first. That might work better.

Sam-I switched all my blogs today and Lucullian with 800+ posts took 15 minutes while Aglio e olio with 900+ posts took only 5 minutes. Easypeasy. So there will be time to do both! Do B&P first or maybe it's better to do fbs first so that you see that it goes well and then have the courage do switch your own...?

My transition went fairly smooth - it took about 20 minutes. I don't remember being able to pick which ones I wanted to transfer though. It automatically choose the blogs I owned and left the blogs I don't the same.

Sam - it will automatically switch over ALL your blogs. I have 5-6 and it switched them all when I switched Sweetnicks over. Can't promise anything, but it was a breeze for me - crossing fingers that it's the same for you and FBS. ;)

Sam, I switched all my blogs (one of them is also a team blog) last night and was fairly surprised that it went down so unspectacularly. It took not more than a few minutes.

For the team blog I just got the message that the next time the members log in they will also have to switch using that switch button. So, that might be interesting. Currently my Dashboard says that the Food Blog Scool is still running on the old blogger. Clicking on the "learn more" link:

http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=55062

The important part being:
"A team blog will only switch to the new version of Blogger when the original owner moves his or her account over.

Team members who have not yet switched to the new version will still see the blog on their dashboards, but it will be grayed out and inaccessible. Once those members move their own accounts to the new version of Blogger, they will be able to access the blog as before."

"If a team member of a blog switches their account to the new version of Blogger before the blog owner does, then the team blog is not converted. It will appear on the team member's converted dashboard, but clicking on it will lead back to the old version of Blogger"

More under that link above.

So go for it Sam, I think there should be no trouble.

Go on with yo' bad self, Sam. We'll make the transition smoothly, I'm sure.

Sam, go for it. I switched my student's blog and everything seems fine. It did take a bit longer than i expected (25 minutes) for their puny blog, but maybe a lot of people were switching. The biggest hassle was that I had to create a google account for my students and I didn't want them to use my e-mail address so I had to set up an e-mail account for them.

Do it, Sam! Take the leap of faith! I'm sure that there's not too many pressing issues for bloggers that can't wait until foodblogscool is back up and running...

Trust blogger!

I am another beta success story. Took about 2 minutes and I had about 400 posts. Piece of cake. It automatically knows you have a custom template so it uses the Classic template instead of the new drag and drop one.

And the instant publishing and photo upload is just a dream....

Sam, I switched and no problems. One thing you might like to know is that when/if you get that screen "we need a bit more time" it never changes to tell you the switch is complete. They send you an e-mail though when you have finished the switching process. If I hadn't switched my student's blog first and learned that screen wouldn't change, I might have stared at it for hours with my palms sweating and heart racing when I switched KK over!

Good luck. Blogger seems to have stepped up to the plate and really worked out the bugs for us. Personally I'm so glad I waited, but I do appreciate those who were brave enough to switch sooner so we could all be empowered by them.

That anonymous comment just above is me. I don't know why it's showing up as anonymous.

hmm - bizarro - you werent anonymous when i read it earlier - looks like the switch has changed many of the commenters to anonymous ones. how very strange.

guess this is a 'feature' of the new blogger.

To the anonymous commenter who posted on Saturday, January 27, 2007 at 8:53:00 PM,

It automatically knows you have a custom template so it uses the Classic template instead of the new drag and drop one.

The thing that is stopping me is that I don't want to lose access to my template and be stuck with the "easier" drag and drop. If it does NOT sense that I have a custom template will there be a way out?

chocolate lady-

In case you are still unsure, they have a feature that saves your template (I went ahead and copied my source code to a Word file) before you switch to theirs.

I haven't done it yet either.

By the way YAY SAM! :)
